Help Save '90s Sundance Hit 'In The Soup'

You may remember the titles of two seminal films that came out of the 1992 Sundance Film Festival. There was Alison Anders’s film, “Gas Food Lodging” which achingly depicted the longing and wants of teenage girls born to a barren community. Then, of course, there was a little film called “Reservoir Dogs” by Quentin Tarantino, a precursor to the wild success he was going to have in only two years upon the release of 1994’s, “Pulp Fiction.” However, along with what must’ve been plenty of other worthy titles, there was “In the Soup,” the independent comedy from Alex Rockwell that ended up walking away with the Grand Jury prize that year.

A distinct rendering of the 90’s zeitgeist, attitude, and atmosphere, “In the Soup” hasn’t had the same longevity as its Park City peers, but it is going to celebrate its 25th anniversary in style this year with a re-release of its first ever digital copy.

The trouble they’re running into, however, is that the only archival, black and white print was previously damaged so they’re beginning a Kickstarter campaign to encourage fans to aid in the restoration of the damaged print and re-release of it. Along with releasing it digitally, distributors Factory 25 hope to create a new archival print with the ultimate goal of reaching a wider audience for the movie than ever before.

Star Steve Buscemi has taken his time to help celebrate and rally around the film, saying “In the Soup, for me, is one of the great, independent films of the 90’s. It breaks my heart that this film is falling apart.”
Bonuses concerning participants include a scan of the original script with director notes, one-of-a-kind artifacts from the film production, Skype conversations with Jennifer Beals or Sam Rockwell, a restoration production credit on the film and more. Here’s the synopsis for the film:

In the Soup is the story of an aspiring young New York filmmaker (Steve Buscemi) in the throes of his creative struggle, his beautiful neighbor and muse (Jennifer Beals), and a lovable con man (Seymour Cassel), chasing their dreams in quintessential 1990s NYC amidst a cast of oddball characters played by Stanley Tucci, Sam Rockwell, Will Patton, Jim Jarmusch, Debi Mazar, Carol Kane, and others.
