Up until now, most folks following the development of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” have simply assumed that Felicity Jones — whose role has been kept under wraps — is playing Black Cat. This speculation was seemingly “confirmed” last month when the actress neatly dodged a direct question asking if she was indeed playing that character. But we may now have a bit clearer of an answer, as Jones is feeling bit more chatty this month and has gone ahead and revealed her role in the upcoming sequel….almost….
Talking with View London, when asked about her part in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Jones said, “It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend – I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.” She then added, that she wasn’t allowed to say the character’s name, but one good guess would be that she’s taking the role of Lily Hollister/Menace.
The character is the girlfriend of Harry Osborne (aka Green Goblin, set to be played by Dane DeHaan), and in the comics she comes across one of his father’s hideouts and accidentally comes in contact with the Goblin serum, earning her powers. She keeps her powers hidden from Harry, and uses them to wield mayhem across the city and battle Spider-Man.
Of course, we are not certain Jones is playing Lily Hollister/Menace, but the evidence we have thus far seems to add up. Moreover, it would be yet another new character from Spider-Man universe introduced in this series of films, spicing things up nicely, particularly with a female villain.
Thoughts? Is Menace preferable over Black Cat or do you think Jones could be playing someone else? With Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) also set to appear, is this too much villain overkill? Perhaps they’ll hold back the full Menace reveal until parts 3 and 4? Weigh in below. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opens on May 2, 2014.
