Next to the plot of Terrence Malick’s “The Tree Of Life,” nothing seems to be more safeguarded in the cinema world than details of Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” That is, until now?
InContention has posted an article detailing the film through a source who has reportedly read the script, with several points covering the same ground noted by a RottenTomatoes forum post via /Film. According to the InContention source, “Inception” “takes place in a world where we have developed a means by which we can enter people’s dreams. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jacob Hastley has been described as a “CEO type,” but he is also something of a criminal. He dives into people’s dreams to extract information.”
But wait, Jacob Hastley? Sure, that’s the name listed on “Inception’s” IMDB page but from what we gather it simply stems from an April Fool’s Day joke courtesy of Script Shadow, so holes start to surface already. Plot wise though, it’s anyone’s guess if they’re on the money but, as they continue to write, it does sound potentially feasible. Many of the other characters’ names mentioned in the report correctly stem from a call sheet leak though word has it they are the surnames, not first names of the characters.
Ellen Page reportedly plays Ariadne, a young college student studying in Paris who, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur and Tom Hardy’s Eames, is a part of Jacob’s team who engineers the dreams. Page’s Ariadne is purported to be the main “architect” of dreams which are manipulated through injections, a technology that is easily accessible and can be transported by suitcases. The scene in the trailer with DiCaprio on a plane is reportedly when Jacob’s team are accessing someone’s dreams.
Cillian Murphy meanwhile is rumored to play a “business-type” known as Fischer who is on the brink of heading a company. For some unknown reason, Jacob and his team are trying to implant an idea into Fischer’s mind in order to “compel him to separate the company into two smaller companies.” Ken Watanabe plays Saito, the film’s only reported villain who is blackmailing Jacob for unknown reasons.
The source also reports that the plot will kick-off as Jacob and his wife Lisa (a name also stemming from ScriptShadow’s joke) — played by Marion Cotillard — “find themselves stuck in many levels of a dream and Lisa tries to convince him to stay in that world, that it is much better than real life. However, Jacob wants to return to his children and the real world.” What unfolds is that “Lisa commits suicide in the dream in order to return to the real world” and “when Jacob himself returns, he is charged with his wife’s murder and has to flee with his children.”
This reported plot line involving DiCaprio’s protagonist being on the run from the law after being accused of his wife’s murder seemingly corresponds with a side from the film’s casting we got our hands on a few weeks ago of which, as we wrote, “involves [the protagonist] asking his son mundane questions before having to confirm that the child’s mother is ‘gone.'” Another side which corresponds with the reported plot involves “the title character — revealed to be ‘Rogers” attorney — warns Rogers of some sort of imminent threat: “These people want to put you away. Nothing is going to stop them. So as your attorney, I advise you to run,” possibly hinting manipulation by a source in Cotillard’s character’s “death” and subsequent accusations of DiCaprio.
Slowly but surely, things will probably leak online but for now, this is a very interesting start. “Inception” has just moved it’s filming to Tangiers in Morocco and is due to hit theaters July 16th 2010. [InContention]
