After talking up hopes of collaborating with some the South Korea’s finest helmers during a trip to that country earlier this year, it looks like Gallic actress Isabelle Huppert has followed through with her word, now teaming with the prolific Hong Sang-soo for an mysterious, untitled project.
Production on the film is already under way with very little details currently known, however, it seems Huppert herself was coming into the collaboration a little blind as well. “I said yes because I love his movies,” she told LesInrocks. “The only thing I know [about] the project is that we will turn in a small seaside town three hours from Seoul and there are five characters.”
Nicknamed Korea’s Eric Rohmer, we’re sure this latest film project won’t be veering far off from the Hong wheelhouse — placing the relationships of his characters under the microscope to comedic, dramatic and sometimes tragic effect. Yu Jun-Sang, star of Hong’s “Hahaha” (which took home the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes last year), was revealed to be another one of the lead actors in the film, but no other talent has been announced just yet.
It’ll also mark another collaboration between Huppert and an award-winning Asian director who frequents the Croisette — earlier this year, she completed production on Brilliante Mendoza‘s hostage-drama “Captured,” which is expected to feature at one this year’s fall film festivals. A late 2011 release in Korea is reportedly being eyed for Hong and Huppert’s collaboration as well though what that means for the rest of the world remains to be seen. Surely they’ll be taking it to both party’s regular stomping ground, Cannes? [10Asia]
