Question: has Ivan Reitman made a good movie since the '90s? While "Kindergarten Cop" is a guilty pleasure, it's fair to say that since "Dave" (which has its fans, we guess) Reitman has pretty much delivered one mediocrity after another with "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" marking a particular low, and last year's "No Strings Attached" not being much better. In fact, one could say he's never really been that great of a director, with "Ghostbusters" and "Stripes" (probably still the two movies he's best known for) arguably succeeding because of the talent in front of the camera, not necessarily behind. All this is to say that Reitman is going to be making another movie.
Paramount has picked up the script "Draft Day" with Reitman attached to helm, and already it seems like another moderate, middle of the road comedy that he seems to specialize in these days. Penned by Rajiv Joseph (a Pulitzer-nominated playwright who also penned episodes of "Nurse Jackie") and Scott Rothman, the story centers on the manager of the Buffalo Bills who spends the day trying to make sure he gets the number one pick in the NFL draft. In addition to ensuring that no woman or non-sports fan in America will give a shit about the premise, this more or less sounds like a feature length version of the "Party Down" episode "Cole Landry's Draft Day Party" except from the manager's point of view.
But, eh, whatever. It's hard to get too worked up over a new Reitman film, but we guess it's cool he's still getting out there and doing his thing. No word yet on when it might roll. [Deadline]
