You may not realize it. He may not realize it – shoot, he might not even want it, but Jack Reynor is on the cusp of becoming that “it” leading man. That’s the big takeaway many in the industry will have after Reynor’s superb performance in Ari Aster‘s new prestige horror flick, “Midsommar.” Of course, if everyone was paying attention they would have realized Reynor’s been racking up the great roles for a few years now.

Since a quick segue to studio flicks with “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the American born, but Irish raised actor has popped in Justin Kurzel’s “Macbeth,” the somehow still underrated “Sing Street,” Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” Ben Wheatley’s “Free Fire” and Mimi Leder’s “On The Basis Of Sex,” among other projects. Now, with “Midsommar” he plays a character at the dead center of what could be one of the breakout movies of the summer.
It’s best to go into Aster’s follow up to “Hereditary” knowing as little as possible, but it won’t spoil anything to reveal that Reynor plays Christian, a doctoral student trying to help his girlfriend Dani, portrayed by Florence Pugh, deal with an unexpected tragedy. When Christian invites Dani along with some of his friends to visit a secluded Swedish commune it starts a chain of events neither could have expected.
Reynor sat down with the Four Quadrant podcast to discuss whether his character is a “total dick,” the insane difficulty of shooting in Hungary during a hot summer, to teases his new short “Bainne” and explain why he loves shooting his CBS All Access series “Strange Angel.”
Please note: There is a major spoiler for “Midsommar” that Reynor gives away during the beginning of the podcast. If that matters to you, listening after you watch the film is advised.
