This film features a lot more drama than the action prevalent in some of your other films. Do you prefer these more intimate moments to the big action sequences while you’re performing?
I do love it, I got to say. I do love it. It’s not really about preference for me because it’s such a different task, at times. I feel so lucky to be working on all the great things that I get to tackle. And some things are more enjoyable than others. Some things are more challenging than others. And that’s what I’ve found about doing some more intimate drama stuff in the last few years is there’s a different task at hand in finding the work and exploring relationships. Sometimes it can be even more challenging working in a more contained space and there’s tighter budget restrictions. You have less toys to play with, in a way, but sometimes that makes it even more enjoyable. I came from the theatre, so when I get to crash cars and do huge fight sequences on all massive sets, that shit’s wild [laughter] and I love it, but it’s not what I necessarily was always chasing as far as my love for acting and performance. So, it’s very different, man, and I feel fortunate that I’ve been able to explore some smaller, more dramatic stuff in recent times.
Can you share anything about Captain Boomerang’s character arc in the upcoming “Suicide Squad” sequel? How’s production coming along?
There’s not much I can say, man. I’m sure you understand. I’m pretty restricted on what I can reveal about that. But I will say I’m stoked to be joining the cast again, and we’re getting ready to suit up and get into our next installment. So, fans can look forward to that. I’m sure it’s going to be awesome. And I’m pumped to be working with James Gunn.
His attachment was an awesome announcement.
Buckle up.
You were in the “Terminator Genisys.” With “Dark Fate” coming out soon, could you speak a bit about some of the challenges and expectations that come with carrying such an influential franchise on your shoulders?
Yeah. I don’t know too much about the new one, man. I think it’ll be awesome. Good to see them all back in the saddle again. I’m really curious, and as a fan of it, I’ll be pumped to check it out, that’s for sure.
Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?
Yeah. There’s a bunch coming out. I just wrapped a movie called “Jolt,” which will be out next year. And I just came off an amazing miniseries in Australia [“Stateless“]. I had a really wonderful experience working with Cate Blanchett – she also is a producer – and Yvonne Strahovski, who’s just a phenomenal talent. And it’s always great to go home. It tackles some really interesting themes around the debate around asylum seekers, globally, and the systemic value of the handling of some of these issues. Heavy material and heavy subject matter. I’m pumped to share that with the world.
“Semper Fi” will be released both theatrically and via VOD on October 4, 2019.
