If you’re a fan of either Jake Gyllenhaal or Denis Villeneuve, you know that both are creators working at the top of their game right now. You have Gyllenhaal taking some of the most interesting and challenging roles of his career, while Villeneuve is off making ambitious sci-fi epics such as “Dune.” But the two also work incredibly well together, even if it’s been a while since we’ve seen them collaborate. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too much longer, as both men are attached to a new series, “The Son,” coming to HBO.
According to the premium network, Gyllenhaal is set to star in the upcoming series, “The Son,” which will be directed by Villeneuve. The series is based on the novel of the same name by author Jo Nesbø. No description of the series was given, but HBO describes the novel’s story as “a tale of vengeance set amid Oslo’s brutal hierarchy of corruption.” Look, at this point, Gyllenhaal can star in a series about a paper clip and we’d be down to see it, as long as it’s directed by Villeneuve.
Villeneuve is attached to direct, with Lenore Zion onboard to showrun, write, and executive produce with Kilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham. In addition to starring, Jake Gyllenhaal will also executive produce through his Nine Stories banner alongside Riva Marker. Yes, that’s a lot of names, but obviously, Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal are the big draws, along with Nolan and Joy, who have already cemented their status at HBO thanks to their hit series, “Westworld.”
“Jonah and Lisa are a formidable creative force and we are excited to collaborate with them again, alongside the brilliant Lenore, to adapt Jo Nesbø’s novel,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. “Denis is a master at weaving visually exquisite and unique narratives, Jake is a gifted actor and producer whose work often traverses provocative and compelling terrain, and of course, he and Denis have collaborated brilliantly in the past. We are beyond excited to see how this powerhouse team tackles this exceptional work.”

This is definitely not the first time that Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal have worked together. Previously, the duo worked on the incredibly underrated thrillers “Prisoners” and “Enemy.” And just recently, Gyllenhaal teased that he’s working with his directing partner on a new project, which we can now assume is “The Son.”
Obviously, with Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal currently busy with a variety of new projects, it’s unclear when “The Son” will actually go into production. However, with those two involved, it’s clear that the new HBO series will be one of the most anticipated series on the horizon.
