Awards season goes into full force in the next few days; we’ve had plenty of critics’ groups picks and top-ten lists already, but tomorrow is the Golden Globe announcements, and today sees the first of the major guilds — usually the best reflection of how the Academy will end up going — announcing their nominations. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nods are being revealed by Eva Longoria and "Men Women & Children" actor Ansel Elgort (the only time the words ‘awards ‘and ‘Men Women & Children’ will be seen in close proximity).
Last year saw SAG match up relatively closely with the Academy’s nominations, but with some major differences including ensemble, Actor, and Supporting Actress nods for the un-nominated "The Butler," and nods for Tom Hanks, Emma Thompston, Daniel Bruhl and James Gandolfini that didn’t come to pass.
So how did the SAG gang go this year? Questionably, we’d say. The most notable loser of the day is "Selma," which went without a single nomination from the guild, despite an expansive cast. Could Paramount not show the film to enough voters in time (as was the case with "The Wolf Of Wall Street" for the studio last year?). Or did they just not take to it? There were also some happy surprises — Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Oscar prospects take a big boost with a nod for "Nightcrawler," and it’s good to see Mark Ruffalo nominated for "Foxcatcher." But also some baffling ones, with Jennifer Aniston making the cut for "Cake," and most strangely, Naomi Watts‘ performance in "St. Vincent," maybe the worst the actress has ever given, making the Supporting Actress list.
Also more surprising was "Boyhood" and "Grand Budapest Hotel" making the ensemble list over "Selma" and "Into The Woods," while "The imitation Game" and "The Theory Of Everything" had good days, as did "Birdman." Still, there’s plenty of time to go, and twists and turns to come, before the Oscar nods, so don’t expect these nominations to match up exactly at all.
