James Cameron Says 'Battle Angel' Project Is "Still On His Radar"

Earlier this year, we reminded readers about a James Cameron project that at one time was supposed to go before “Avatar.”

In 2005, at the same time he announced “Avatar,” he also proclaimed his intentions to make “Battle Angel” — a futuristic love story thriller about a 26th-century cyborg” that he also envisioned as a trilogy in 3D, based on Yukito Kishiro’s 12 popular Japanese graphic novels (titled “Battle Angel Alita”) about a nymphette who morphs into an action heroine.

In June, the Wall Street Journal said “Avatar 2,” could come in the next three or four years, but possibly, “some other big film that uses that same technology” could trump it. We speculated that “Battle Angel” could be that project.

ComingSoon talked to Cameron recently about the theatrical “Avatar” re-release and mentioned the project again, saying “It’s still on my radar. It’s a story I love. [We] wrote the script back before we started ‘Avatar’ and again, we gotta figure out where it lies [in the schedule]. I don’t have infinite time,” he said alluding to the significant chunk of time he would need to devote to making it (“Battle Angel,” like “Avatar,’ was conceived as a trilogy).

Will we ever see that project? One assumes if he does go through with ‘Avatar 2 & 3’ it would not be anytime soon, but Cameron has played a producer role before (“Solaris”) and will again soon (Guillermo del Toro’s “At The Mountains of Madness“), so it’s feasible that if need be, he could hand it off.
