Earlier this year, legions of "Avatar" fans were handed some disappointing news, namely that the return to Pandora will be delayed. Originally scheduled to drop in 2016, "Avatar 2" won’t arrive until late 2017. "There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film," James Cameron said at the time. And it seems as if he’s not only trying to wrangle three more films conceived the way he wants, but is also trying to stop the saga from extending to a fifth film.
HeyUGuys recently caught up with composer James Horner, who shared a little insight into the current status of the mega-sequels, which finds Cameron trying to keep the franchise manageable. “Right now, Jim has….four sequels script-wise, and he’s trying to make it into three," Horner said. "And that is where I think his effort is going, right now, to keep it three sequels. Because he’s got so much going on, how do you keep it expanding into a fifth movie, in total."
You would think that when every studio on the planet wants to squeeze as much out of a franchise as possible that Fox would add another movie onto the series. However, the studio will spend a pretty penny on what will undoubtedly be more technology pushing wonder from Cameron, so maybe they want to keep the budget as reasonable as possible.
