Jane Campion Wins Top Prize At 2022 DGA Awards

Like many other awards shows, the DGA Awards returned to an in-person event for 2022. This year’s event was hosted by Judd Apatow and featured a number of minor upsets. There was no big surprise with the top honor, however, as Jane Campion won her first DGA Award for “The Power of the Dog.”

Campion became just the third woman to win the category after Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker” and Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” last year. This win solidifies her frontrunner status to take the Best Director honor at the Academy Awards later this month.

In the other film categories, Maggie Gyllenhaal continued her Spirit Award winnings ways with the First Time Feature Film Award for “The Lost Daughter.” In something of a surprise, Stanley Nelson took the Documentary honor for “Attica” over Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and “Summer of Soul.”

On the television side, Paul Dugdale won the Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Special awards for “Adele: One Night Only.” The now-retired Don Roy King won his 10th DGA Award and his sixth straight in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Regularly Scheduled Programming category for “Saturday Night Live.” Lucia Aniello took the Comedy Series award for “Hacks,” episode “There Is No Line” and Barry Jenkins won the Movies for Television and Limited Series category for “Underground Railroad.” Mark Mylod took the award for Drama Series for “Succession” which earned all five nominations in the category. His winning episode was “All The Bells Say.”
