In case you luckily managed to block all memory of the Academy Award-winning 2016 film “Suicide Squad,” and all its behind-the-scenes drama, Jared Leto notoriously spent much of his method acting giving increasingly weird and perverse gifts to his castmates. These allegedly included everything from anal beads and used condoms, to pig carcasses and dead rats. Now, Leto has gone on record to deny the dead rat gift, and nothing more.
Leto recently stopped by GQ to break down some of his most iconic roles, including his turn as Joker in the David Ayer-directed “Suicide Squad. Almost instantly, the conversation turns to the creepy behind-the-scenes gifts. “It’s also interesting how this stuff all takes on a life of its own,” Leto said. “I never gave Margot Robbie a dead rat. That’s not true.” Now, when the story was initially reported, Robbie said it was a live rat, so maybe he was clarifying? Well, not really, because Leto immediately tried to spin it to be way less creepy and believable. “I actually gave her — I found this place in Toronto that had great vegan cinnamon buns, and that was a very common thing.”
As our own editor-in-chief, Rodrigo Perez tweeted, this doesn’t track with what Leto himself proudly boasted about during the press tour for the film all the way back in 2016. “I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise, a spontaneity and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there,” Leto told E! News before claiming that he had gifted his castmates used condoms and anal beads.

During a different interview, Academy Award winner Viola Davis described how Leto had a henchman “who would come into the rehearsal room with a dead pig and drop it on the table” and also send Margot Robbie a rat “still alive, in a box.”
