There are a couple producing names in Hollywood that are almost brands in and of themselves. First, you have Kevin Feige, overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who has become a bit of a legend in his own right, doing things that were previously thought of as impossible. And on the other end of the budget spectrum, you have Jason Blum. The founder of Blumhouse Productions, Blum has become the go-to name in micro-budget horror, somehow finding a way to turn sub-$10 million budgeted films into blockbusters.
And when you’re someone like Jason Blum, people are going to have questions. So, when Blum opened up his Twitter recently and solicited fan questions, there was a seemingly never-ending supply of them. Oh and a fair share of people saying, “Please reboot/remake [Insert Favorite Genre Franchise]!”
However, a couple of tidbits actually stood out and are getting people excited. First, a couple people asked Blum if he’d be interested in spearheading the Dark Universe films. For those that don’t know, Universal was attempting its own cinematic universe populated by the famous monsters like Frankenstein’s Monster, Wolfman, Bride of Frankenstein, and of course, the Mummy. The latter of which is the only film to see production and failed miserably.

In response to those questions, Blum replied emphatically, “Yes!!!!” And when asked again, specifically if the studio had approached him to help with the Dark Universe, he tweeted, “They haven’t but if they did I would be all in.”
As you might expect, this is the type of news that will get horror fans all worked up, and should get Universal on the phone. Blum is really the biggest name in genre filmmaking right now, with a string of horror hits in his filmography, so if anyone is able to turn the Dark U around, it would be Blum. Plus, what else does Universal have to lose at this point?
Another interesting bit of info was when the producer was asked what the chances are of Blumhouse claiming the rights to popular horror franchises. He replied, “The chances are excellent.” This question was, of course, prompted by the fact that the next big Blumhouse release is the upcoming “Halloween” reboot/sequel and is expected to be a huge hit.
He was then asked what slasher film he’d like to remake/reboot next, and his reply was “Friday the 13[th].” Again, if the rights-holders to the Jason Vorhees franchise aren’t on the phone right now, they’re doing it wrong. If the marketing materials and buzz surrounding “Halloween” are indications, it appears that Blumhouse is going to hit it big with the Michael Myers franchise and could easily do the same with ‘Friday.’
Only the future will tell us whether or not Blum gets his wish and he can relaunch the Dark Universe or perhaps “Friday the 13th.” In the meantime, those wanting to see what Blum has in store for “Halloween” can check it out at the upcoming TIFF and in theaters on October 19.
