On a shitty day like today, when GOP members of the House voted to get rid of poor people’s healthcare so their friends could buy more boats, it’s important to hang on to little things. Like, for instance, that the bill still probably won’t pass the Senate, and the GOP will have thrown away the mid-terms in 2018 for nothing. Or, to take another instance, that Paul Thomas Anderson has a new movie coming out.
Anderson’s been shooting his new film, a drama set in the fashion world that reunites him with Daniel Day-Lewis, since the start of the year. And we’ve known for a while that Focus, who’ll be releasing the movie, are planning a fall release. But now an official date has arrived, with the studio setting the movie to come out in limited release on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2017
It’s PTA’s first Christmas release since “There Will Be Blood” (which technically opened on the 26th), exactly ten years later, boding well for the film’s Oscar chances. That’ll put it opposite Hugh Jackman’s musical, “The Greatest Showman On Earth” (which is going wide), and a few days after the Benedict Cumberbatch vehicle, “The Current War,” as well as Steven Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers drama and Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing.” So the usual awards-fare rush will be in full effect.
Escaping that rush is “Tully,” the new film from Jason Reitman, which sees Charlize Theron play a woman struggling with a newborn who hires a night nurse (Mackenzie Davis), and forms a bond with her. Reitman’s been hit-and-miss lately, but this sees him teaming up again with Diablo Cody, the writer of his best films “Juno” and “Young Adult”. Focus have also set a date for that: it’ll go wide on April 20th, putting it head-to-head with Wes Anderson’s “Isle Of Dogs.” Don’t rule out seeing it at TIFF first though, given Reitman’s long history with the festival. The company will also open Rupert Wyatt‘s sci-fi film “Captive State” with John Goodman and Vera Farmiga on August 17th, 2018, and have moved Joe Wright‘s “The Darkest Hour” back two whole days.
