Jason Segel Says He's Just Writing, Not Directing Lego Movie 'The Billion Brick Race’

Jason Segel, Lego Movie, Billion Brick RaceThe success of the "The Lego Movie" has spawned a franchise, with a sequel, a superhero spinoff centered on Will Arnett‘s Batman, and more all in the works. One of those projects is "The Billion Brick Race," announced earlier this year as a co-writing and co-directing venture between Jason Segel and Drew Pearce. But catching up with the actor today, he clarified his involvement.

“That was misreported when it first came out,” Segel told us during press rounds for "The End Of The Tour" about co-directing the movie. However, he is still co-writing the standalone effort, and while he couldn’t spill any details this early on, he did promise that, "It’s everything a kid would hope for, I think.”

As for aspirations for the director’s chair, Segel is surprisingly humble, noting that he already knows plenty of talent with the experience to do a better job than he might. “I feel like if there was something where I felt like I’m the only person who could direct this, then I would direct it. However, I know, personally, a bunch of people who could direct it better than me. That’s how I felt so far," he explained. "So far, I felt like if I were to direct something, it would be out of pride, to say that I directed it. And when I work with someone like James Ponsoldt, I’m reminded that this is a proper talent and skill, and it should be left to people who have that passion. I’d rather something be great, than say I directed it.”

With so many actors ready to answer that they’ll direct someday, it’s rather refreshing to hear somebody cautious and thoughtful about the reasons to get behind the camera.

"The End Of The Tour" is now playing.
