It’s no secret that Warner Bros. would love to somehow make a sequel to Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” despite the fact that no sequel was ever written and the graphic novel is a self-contained story. They see tons of further lucrative potential in ‘Watchmen” as a franchise, but not only that, they probably need more ways to recoup now that the profits have to split not only between themselves and Legendary Pictures, but 20th Century Fox who basically won their court case.
In an interview with Moviehole, Jefferey Dean Morgan notes that he and the rest of the cast are already signed on for a sequel should there ever be one (which demonstrates that WB had this potential plan since minute one), but says — much like everyone else involved — don’t hold your breath.
“We are all signed for sequels, but, ya know, there’d be no Rorschach, there’d be no Comedian – – it’d be sorta useless. It’d have to be a prequel. But I’d say unless Alan Moore says he’s gonna write something, we’ll never see ‘Watchmen 2.’ There may be someone sitting in a room somewhere at Warner Bros waiting to see if this does OK, and ready to pitch another – but I doubt Zack [Snyder] would do another, and without him, I wouldn’t go back, and I can’t imagine any of the other actors would want to either.”
It probably won’t happen, it can’t happen, aside from a “Minute Men” prequel, can it? But it is interesting to note how WB have wrapped everyone up just in case (you have to go back if you’re under contract, no?). Sure, signing actors on for sequels in a film like this is standard operating procedure, but still, the desire is clearly there.
