Back in October, it was reported that Tim Burton was set to reboot “The Addams Family” for a new generation with a new Netflix live-action TV series. Months later, it was revealed by the streaming platform that the series would be a coming-of-age story focused on the life of Wednesday Addams. And now, Netflix has announced which actress is going to take over the coveted role, naming Jenna Ortega as the lead in Burton’s new show.
According to Netflix, actress Jenna Ortega is set to star as Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s upcoming series, “Wednesday.” As mentioned, the series seems to be in the same vein as the recently-ended “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” by making Wednesday Addams the main character in a coming-of-age story that a series that is described as “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” “Wednesday” is set to be directed by Burton, while the series will be showrun by “Smallville” veterans, Al Gough and Miles Millar.
While Ortega is still pretty young, she does have a fairly long history with Netflix. Previously, she starred in the incredibly popular series, “You,” as well as the recent family-comedy feature, “Yes Day,” both of which are Netflix Originals. In addition, she’s appeared in the Netflix horror film, “The Babysitter: Killer Queen,” as well as lending her voice to the animated series, “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.” Clearly, the streaming platform loves her work and is now giving her the chance to break out with “Wednesday.”
It’s unclear when “Wednesday” will begin production and eventually debut on Netflix. But fans of “The Addams Family” and Tim Burton (which seems like would have some crossover amongst the demographics) are probably really excited to see what is to come.
