While the sequels might not have lived up to the original film creatively, “The Matrix” trilogy is still known as one of the most influential action films of the past two decades. After the first film was released, filmmakers from all genres took bits and pieces from what The Wachowskis did and copied it for their own films. Bullet time, CGI fight scenes, and yes, even the tight, black leather costuming all became commonplace. And according to a ‘Matrix 4’ actress, Jessica Henwick, Lana Wachowski is about to change the industry again.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Henwick, who is currently promoting her new YA action-romance “Love & Monsters,” discussed what it’s like working on “The Matrix 4” and how she is constantly wowed by the work being done by writer-director Lana Wachowski (Lilly Wachowski famously stepped aside and handed the reins to her sister as the sole filmmaker in the new film).
“There are definitely moments on set where Yahya [Abdul-Mateen II] and I look at each other and we just go, ‘Matrix 4,” Henwick said. “Those pinch me moments. Yeah. Lana is doing some really interesting things on a technical level in the same way that you know, she created a style back then. I think she’s going to change the industry again with this film. There’s some camera rigs that I’ve never seen before that we’re using. That’s probably all I can say for that.”

Obviously, if “The Matrix 4” was released and nothing new was developed for the action scenes, people would be disappointed. Even though the kung-fu and heavily CGI fights were revolutionary at the time, they’ve been done to death over the past 20 years that Lana Wachowski needs to pull a rabbit out of a hat again to impress jaded filmgoers. Hopefully, what Henwick said is true and that’s exactly what the filmmaker is doing for the upcoming sequel.
Currently (and things can definitely change, as they have already), “The Matrix 4” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 22, 2021. You can watch the interview with Henwick and her “Love & Monsters” co-star Dylan O’Brien below.
