'Jessica Jones' Series Creator Says Knowledge Of Cancellation Allowed For "Closure" & A "Satisfying" Ending

For the bulk of the series in the Netflix/Marvel partnership, the eventual cancellation came as a surprise. None of the actors or behind-the-scenes people really had any clue that the last season would, indeed, be the final one. This has left “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist,” and “The Punisher” with the feeling of being incomplete. However, for “Jessica Jones,” the series creator Melissa Rosenberg was given a bit of time before the release of Season 3 to somehow craft a finale that felt right. And she feels like the upcoming final season of “Jessica Jones” is a fitting end to the character.

Speaking to Collider, Rosenberg was asked about how the third season fits in the overall story of the title character and her supporting cast, and if fans can expect some closure by the end of the season. Luckily, at least for Rosenberg, the writer-producer was already leaving the series at the end of Season 3, which meant she wanted to add some finality to the season anyway. But there was also a bit of freedom when she learned of Netflix’s decision to end its run.

The series creator said that the knowledge that the third season would be the last for “Jessica Jones” “enabled us to really look at, ‘Where do we want to leave each of these characters? If you look at all three seasons, as a whole, what feels like a complete journey for all of the characters?’ We really got a chance to land them, in a satisfying way, for us and, hopefully, for the audience.”

“We found closure with it,” added Rosenberg. “It was just really gratifying, and it felt very honest.”

The real question is how fans will react to the upcoming final season. As mentioned, “Jessica Jones” is the only Netflix/Marvel series where fans know the end is here before they begin watching the first episode of Season 3. At this point, after the disappointment of Netflix canceling the rest of the streamer’s Marvel offerings, will fans even bother with Season 3? We’ll never know, as Netflix doesn’t give data like that, but either way, the end is here for “Jessica Jones” and Rosenberg hopes fans give it a shot.

“Jessica Jones” Season 3 arrives on June 14.
