In the realm of cult-classic films, there titles like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “The Room.” But ranking right up there is the Coen Brothers’ “The Big Lebowski.” More than 20 years after the film’s release, ‘Lebowski’ is probably more popular now than ever before. And so it’s only fitting that we are just now getting the first sequel/spin-off, “The Jesus Rolls.”

Unlike ‘Lebowski,’ the new film focuses on the supporting character, Jesus Quintana, as well as his friends Petey and Marie. And though the new teaser doesn’t really hint at anything plot-wise, other than the obvious inclusion of bowling, it does highlight that “The Jesus Rolls” is chock-full of amazing talent.
While the Coen Brothers gave their blessing to the film, the duo isn’t involved in the creation of “Jesus Rolls.” Instead, the film is written and directed by John Turturro. He also stars in the film, naturally, alongside Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, Audrey Tautou, and Christopher Walken.

The real question on everyone’s mind is whether or not “The Jesus Rolls” can even compare to the 1998 film that it derives itself from? Obviously, those are some mighty big sandals to fill, but John Turturro is probably the person most capable of doing this sort of film justice. And with “Fargo” on FX, we’ve seen other people able to take something the Coen Brothers created and successfully spin-off from it.
“The Jesus Rolls” arrives in theaters and VOD on March 6.
Here’s the synopsis:
The Jesus rolls on. Hours after being released from prison, Jesus Quintana (John Turturro) pairs up with fellow misfits Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and Marie (Audrey Tautou), and embarks on a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romance.
