I suppose considering the box office success (grossing more than $870 million worldwide through the first seven films combined) of the “Saw” series, it shouldn’t be too surprising that Hollywood would want to glean as much of a profit from it as possible. It’s this reasoning that brings us to the existence of “Jigsaw,” which will focus on the fictional character John Kramer, the alias for the “Jigsaw Killer,” the primary villain in the saga. What began as a rather subdued (if also grotesque) horror film evolved into a gross out, torture porn anthology and it will be interesting to see what the filmmakers do with the origin story and if they decide to rein in the over-the-top violence for something more psychologically scary.
An early, uneducated guess would say that’s likely not the case. However, for those who enjoy watching characters endure grisly and distressing deaths and have stomachs made of steel, the return to the series and it’s unabashed blood thirsty tone might be something worth celebrating.
Directed by The Spierig Brothers, “Jigsaw” will mark the eighth film in the “Saw” series, having been renamed from “Saw: Legacy.” This will be the first of the “Saw” series for the directors to take on, with previous credits including “Predestination” and “Daybreakers“. With a script by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger and starring Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, James Gomez, and Tobin Bell, “Jigsaw” hits theaters on October 27th.
