If you stuck around the two end-credits scenes during “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” you probably know that JK Simmons returned as J. Jonah Jameson (in a new, Alex Jones-ish role) to cause incredible distress for Spidey and his family. And it appears, as we all expected, that Jameson is going to be sticking around for the long haul in the ‘Spider-Man’ universe.
Speaking to SiriusXM, JK Simmons was asked about his future as the fake news pusher J. Jonah Jameson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond. And not only does he assure fans that he will return to the character that he first played in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, but that his second appearance in the modern franchise is already done.
“There is a future for J. Jonah Jameson,” said Simmons. “Assuming movie theaters reopen and people are back in movie theaters sometime in the [future]. If not, I guess we’ll see it on our TVs at home. There is one more JJJ appearance in the can, and from what I’m hearing, there is a plan for yet another one. So, hopefully, JJJ will continue now and forever.”

Even though Simmons isn’t forthcoming with details, we can assume that the appearance that is already “in the can” is for the upcoming “Spider-Man” spin-off film, “Morbius.” With Michael Keaton already shown in the trailer for the film, it’s clear that Sony is showing how the spin-off film ties into the MCU, so having JJJ appear is a no-brainer. The other cameo he talks about is clearly “Spider-Man 3,” whatever it eventually is called. That film was expected to go before cameras this summer, but COVID-19 had other plans.
So, outside of those two films, is there a bigger role for JJJ down the line? As the interviewer jokes, maybe there’s a potential for a Jameson spin-off (Please, don’t get any stupid ideas, Sony!). Thankfully, it appears that Simmons is well aware of how JJJ works best.
“[JJJ is] one of those less is more characters…I come in, I do my thing. It’s not the biggest part of the thing…but it has an impact while I’m there,” the actor explained. “I really like that, not having to shoulder the whole load.”
As of now, it’s expected that Morbius will arrive in theaters on March 19, 2021.
