Joaquin Phoenix is choosy, so whatever project he decides to take a look at is always worth paying attention to. Even so, taking the role of Jesus? Didn’t see that one coming.
The actor is in early talks to play the son of God in "Mary Magdalene," which would reteam him with "Her" co-star Rooney Mara, who is taking the title role in the picture. Garth Davis ("Top Of The Lake," the highly buzzed awards season contender "Lion") will direct the movie about Jesus’ devoted follower, who saw him crucified and resurrected. And while the Mara/Phoenix combo would be pretty magnetic for this picture, it all apparently hinges on Phoenix’s schedule, and of course, whether or not he wants to roll with the material.
Production on "Mary Magdalene" will this summer. Joaquin as Jesus? I’d be into it. [THR]
