'Star Wars': John Boyega Also Has No Clue What 'Rise Of Skywalker' Means

Star Wars Celebration has kicked off in full force in Chicago this weekend, and that means the title for the new and ninth “Star Wars” movie (and trailer), ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’ has been revealed. And while fans are excited about the new trailer, the title has confused many (we’ve dove into its meaning here a little bit). Does this mean Rey, the last Jedi is a Skywalker? Is it a reference to Kylo Ren who is technically a Skywalker, but also a Solo? And since Luke Skywalker is dead, how can Skywalker’s rise? Well, the thing is, it seems like none of the cast knew about the title until the title was unmasked.

“Star Wars” actor John Boyega (“Attack The Block”), who plays Resistance fighter Finn, for one, is incredibly intrigued, curious and confused and admitted to journalists that he doesn’t understand the meaning of the title—and he stars in the movie!

“I’ve got questions, man. I got questions,” Boyega told USA Today this weekend. “I thought it was going to be ‘Star Wars: Heirs to the Force.’ For some reason, I just had that title in my head, that it would be something along those lines.

“This is just very specific: ‘Rise of Skywalker,’” he added. “And I don’t know what it actually means. Bearing in mind that I’m a part of it, but there were certain changes to the script while we’re filming and I’m not in a lot of the scenes that Rey has with Kylo Ren. So, my curiosity just hit the roof.”

Online theories are, naturally going wild. Of course, there’s a tease of Emperor Palpatine’s return at the end of the trailer too, and so some are speculating Anakin Skywalker could return in some form also.

“I was actually debating this!” he told L.A. Times. “Because, in all honesty, I only found out about the title last night when they gave a cast screening of the trailer that we were going to show. When I saw ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ I was confused. I was like, wait – is one person a Skywalker? Or does it mean the rise of the Skywalker… in all of us? I don’t know!”

It appears J.J. Abrams’ mystery box approach will remain intact for this final film and for his side, he’s not really talking. Revealing anything might risk “breaching the agreement that we have to preserve the fun for fans,” he told USA Today. “But I will say I think it is the right title.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy added that the title, “really draws from all the previous films in a way, even though we’re focused on new characters in the mythology. It really is a perfect combination of what’s come before and where we are today.”

What does that mean? We probably won’t know until December 20 when ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ comes out, but who knows, those pesky gossips could try and leak it first so beware of spoilers.
