John Boyega To Take On Far-Right Extremists In Gavin Hood’s Next Film, ‘The Test’

Though John Boyega’s most recognizable role, so far in his career, has been as Finn in the new “Star Wars” films, the actor has recently made a name for himself as a vocal activist supporting the Black Lives Matter protests and systemic racism in our society. And it appears that he’s willing to tackle those issues head-on with his upcoming film, “The Test.”

According to Deadline, Boyega is set to star opposite Payman Maadi in a new political thriller from writer-director Gavin Hood, titled “The Test.” The film is based on the novella of the same name from author Sylvain Neuvel and tells the story of an immigrant (Maadi) that has to take a citizen evaluation test, moderated by a brilliant psychologist (Boyega). Eventually, the two men have to join up to take on a far-right terrorist group led by a true fanatic.

As mentioned, this is the type of project you’d expect someone like Boyega to tackle, as his political messages have become so much of his identity in recent months. In addition, he’s also starring in the forthcoming Steve McQueen-directed anthology “Small Axe,” which also tackles issues of racism and bigotry. Needless to say, these are sharp turns after starring in Disney’s “Star Wars” for the past half a decade.

Interestingly, “The Test” is yet another film that has seen its development fast-tracked due to the new limitations in the post-COVID era. Considering “The Test” is mainly a two-hander focused on the two leading roles, it’s a film that Hood and his cast can easily produce in a time where safety protocols limit the way movies are filmed.

The project is expected to be the next for Boyega with filming beginning shortly. However, a release date has yet to be announced, though it would seem as if the second half of 2021 is a safe bet.
