Even though I’m a huge fan of last year’s “Halloween” reboot-quel, I have to admit that the main reason I was excited upon hearing the news that Blumhouse was getting the gang back together for two more films, “Halloween Kills” and “Halloween Ends,” is mainly because I knew that meant filmmaker John Carpenter would return to the publicity circuit. If you didn’t follow the legendary filmmaker’s interviews for last year’s film, trust me, they were gold. Every single one of them.
Carpenter’s interviews were so great mainly because of the filmmaker’s devastating honesty. Clearly, he’s at the age where he has nothing to lose and is already cemented as one of the very best directors that horror, and American film in general, have produced.
Even though we’re still a year away from ‘Kills,’ Carpenter is getting me excited already with new comments made at this year’s Keystone Comic-Con in Philadelphia (via The Wrap). To begin, the filmmaker was asked if he really believes that the upcoming “Halloween Ends” is a true ending for the franchise, which has lived on for 40 years?
“As long as there’s money in this, I wouldn’t count on an ending,” Carpenter said.
Truer words have never been spoken, Mr. Carpenter. If last year’s film proved anything, it’s that Michael Myers can still draw a crowd, with the film earning the best box office in franchise history, and some of the best box office in horror film history. Who knew that if you make a quality slasher film with an iconic antagonist that people would support it? Shocking.
But Carpenter also re-iterated that it wasn’t his desire to continue the franchise that brought him back to help Blumhouse with last year’s “Halloween.” It was actually Jason Blum.
“[Jason Blum] convinced me to stop sitting on the sidelines and bitching and get off my butt and help … No one’s ever asked me before,” the filmmaker said.
And obviously, Carpenter is happy with the results.
“I loved what the director, David Gordon Green, did,” said Carpenter. “I thought he did a great job, and it was terrific … [Jamie Lee Curtis] was fabulous, just fabulous. She’s still great … Go see the next ‘Halloween’ movies, they’ll be good!”
There you have it, horror fans, the new ‘Halloween’ films are going to be good, so says Carpenter. “Halloween Kills” is set to arrive in theaters on October 16, 2020, with “Halloween Ends” coming a year later on October 15, 2021.
