The Television Academy handed out the rest of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday evening and it turned out to be quite a historic night. When “Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert” took the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) Emmy it meant that Executive Producer John Legend earned his first Emmy award. It also meant Legend became the first African-American man to win EGOT, also known as earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
Legend joins a list that includes just 14 other people and only one other African-American, Whoopi Goldberg. He earned the first of his 10 Grammys in 2006, an Academy Award in 2015 and a Tony Award in 2017. He still has a shot for his second Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category when the Primetime Emmy Awards are announced on Monday, September 17.
The rest of the night saw “Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert” raise its Emmy tally to 5 wins so far. Combining both nights, “Game of Thrones” and “Saturday Night Live” lead all programs with seven Emmys each. That’s followed by “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” also with five wins and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” with four. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Queer Eye” each took home three Emmy Awards on Sunday evening.
Among major categories, “Last Week Tonight” won Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, “Queer Eye” was honored as Outstanding Structured Reality Program, “Wild Wild Country” won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, “United Shades Of America With W. Kamau Bell” took Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, RuPaul Charles won the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for the third straight year for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “”Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” earned Outstanding Information Series or Special.
