Johnny Depp Cast As Louis XV In New Film From Maiwenn

Despite being the victim of “injustice” and a “Hollywood boycott,” it appears Johnny Depp isn’t struggling that hard to find work. It’s just that he’s having to do what filmmakers Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are doing—work in Europe.

According to French outlet, LCI, Johnny Depp has signed on to star as Louis XV in a new untitled film from writer-director Maiwenn. The film is expected to begin production in France in July, and a release date has yet to be announced. The exact plot of the film has yet to be revealed.

Depp has been the subject of intense allegations and scrutiny over the past few years, after the very public divorce from actress Amber Heard. Since then, he’s found himself booted from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise (replaced by Mads Mikkelsen) and various other projects. The actor has been vocal over that time, denying that he’s done anything wrong, and pointing out the perceived “injustice” he’s been a victim of.

Maiwenn is an award-winning French actress-turned-filmmaker. She’s probably best known for her 2011 film, “Polisse,” which was nominated for a bunch of Cesar Awards and took home the Jury Prize from the Cannes Film Festival. Her most recent feature is the 2020 film, “DNA.”

Considering this period film with Depp in the lead role won’t begin filming until July, it’s most likely we’ll see Maiwenn’s feature debut in 2023, perhaps at the Cannes Film Festival, where she’s had luck before. We’ll just have to wait and see. One thing is safe to assume—the film will not have an easy time finding major distribution in the US.
