Despite many calls on social media to “cancel” actor Johnny Depp, it appears the troubled star is keeping his career going strong. And now, for his next project, he’s going to add the title of producer to his responsibilities.
We already knew that he was going to star in the film, but Deadline is reporting that Depp has signed on to become a partner with producer Andrea Iervolino to produce the new Ciro Guerra film “Waiting for the Barbarians.” The film, from the acclaimed director of “Embrace of the Serpent” and the recent “Birds of Passage,” stars Depp, Mark Rylance, and Robert Pattinson and tells the story of a British magistrate who begins to question his loyalty to the Empire after working in a small colonial town.
“Johnny has the ability to conceptualize material in a way that few can, and is unburdened of conventional industry formulas that dictate the projects that get made, traditionally. As we make strides to embrace disruptiveness, Johnny will be a key collaborator with us and we are tremendously excited to back his visions and instincts on stories to bring to life,” said Iervolino.
“In this era of democratized entertainment, I admire the imaginative ethos of Andrea and look forward to collaborating together in a liberating, progressive manner that will befit the principals of our respective entities,” Depp added.

While film fans may only care about Depp’s producing involvement in his film work, the partnership with Iervolino is interesting for a variety of reasons. Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, is now in a relationship with Iervolino’s TaTaTu. The latter company is an AVOD service that is built on a blockchain platform. While we won’t get into the nitty-gritty of blockchain and why that’s interesting, it’s worth checking out.
In addition to the new film from Guerra, TaTaTu has a variety of…unique projects in development. There’s a biopic about Lamborghini that is set to star Antonio Banderas and Alec Baldwin. There’s the drama “The Sound of Freedom” with stars Jim Caveizel and Mira Sorvino. The platform also recently bought the rights to the doc “Friedkin Uncut” about the titular legendary director.
But perhaps the most interesting of all is an untitled documentary about actor Jeremy Renner. We have no idea what this could be about, as Renner is probably best known for his action movie roles, primarily in the ‘Avengers’ films. Maybe it’s about his odd app? Who knows?
There’s no release date set for “Waiting for the Barbarians,” but production is set to begin later this month.
