While we didn’t cover the libel case on the site (as it’s all part of a huge legal issue that involved the personal lives of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and had very little do with any actual film news), there was a judgment that was handed down recently and Depp found himself losing the lawsuit. Though a lawsuit is definitely not proof of any criminal activity or anything like that, if nothing else, the constant barrage of depositions and evidence that was brought to light was not flattering for anyone involved, specifically not Heard or Depp. And now, it appears that the case has taken its toll on Depp and Warner Bros. has decided that the personal issues are going to keep him from staying a part of the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise.

According to an open letter posted on his Instagram feed, Depp has formally announced his resignation from his role in Warner Bros. ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise. For those not familiar, ‘Fantastic Beasts’ is the spinoff film series from the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. The new prequel films are written by ‘Potter’ author JK Rowling and tell the story of Dumbledore (Jude Law) and his relationship to the evil Grindelwald (Depp). But it doesn’t appear that this announcement is borne of a mutual decision.

“…I wish to let you know that I’ve been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I have respected and agreed to that request,” wrote Depp.
He goes on to say that he plans on appealing the decision of the court and he thanks the fans for all their support. Depp concluded by offering hope for fans of the actor.
“My life and career won’t be defined by this moment in time,” he said.

Even before the decision was announced in his recent lawsuit, there were plenty that questioned Warner Bros.’ commitment for having Depp involved in the franchise. The allegations of domestic violence, which led to the lawsuit, were well-known when the actor was involved in the most recent ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film, ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald.’ And many wondered if he would actually return anyway.
Now, you combine this news with the recent transphobic comments from JK Rowling, and you have to wonder if there won’t be more ‘Fantastic Beasts’ news around the corner involving the writer of the franchise. As for how the franchise can move on without Depp, there is already precedent for showing that Grindelwald can change his appearance, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. You know, because of magic and whatnot. I’m sure Colin Farrell, who played the role in the first film is awaiting his call.
UPDATE: Shortly after this announcement, Variety revealed that WB has delayed “Fantastic Beasts 3” from its November 12, 2021 release date to July 15, 2022. Not at all shocking, give this development and the delay of most everything due to COVID-19.
