OK, so the score to Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi mindbender heist “Inception” is probably pretty incredible, even though what you’ve probably heard so far is not the work of Hans Zimmer (whose ‘Dark Knight’ score is the tits), but in fact the work of composer Zack Hemsey featured in the film’s various trailers (dude’s career launched from that one, his work has mostly been in commercials so far).
What can we expect from Zimmer’s score? Well, you can hear some of it on the “Inception” site right now, and it seems to be very electronic and guitar-based, which it apparently is. In an interview with UAudio, Zimmer essentially confirms those influences are paramount, and he also reveals an interesting tidbit about former-Smiths guitarist/sometimes Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr also played guitar on the score.
“It’s a very electronic score. There is orchestra, but the electronics share an equal spotlight, and I also have Johnny Marr playing guitar. Besides Johnny and the orchestra, everything else stays virtual throughout the mix.”
This shouldn’t entirely surprise anyone who’s followed Marr’s career closely. While he’ll forever be known as the guitarist for The Smiths, Marr is a journeyman with an ever evolving, eclectic career. Apart from contributing to hundreds of records as a sessions man (Bryan Ferry,Simple Minds, Talking Heads, Billy Bragg, Pet Shop Boys, Beck and Oasis to name just a few), he’s also been part of groups like The Pretenders, Electronic (which featured members of New Order), The The, the aforementioned Modest Mouse and The Cribs.
We’d imagine if Zimmer would have called up Marr he woulda said, “yah, mate,” and been there the next day adapting to the new scenario (though, it’s also not like he hasn’t worked on score or soundtracks in the past)
Thanks to our composer friend Simon Taufique for the heads up. “Inception” hits theaters July 16.
