'Joker' Director Says Joaquin Phoenix Was "Unusually Comfortable" Getting Into The Villain's Headspace

It’s been a while since a comic book film that doesn’t have Marvel Studios attached to it has carried as much buzz and hyperbolic proclamations as “Joker.” The film, directed by Todd Phillips, finds actor Joaquin Phoenix portraying the title villain, and the word from early folks who have seen the film is that “Joker” looks destined for a strong awards season run. And according to the film’s director, the reason why this “Batman” spin-off is unique and works so well comes down to how he approached the story at the beginning with Phoenix.

“My goal wasn’t to take Joaquin Phoenix and put him in the comic book universe,” said Phillips (via USAToday). “My goal was to take comic books and put them in the Joaquin Phoenix universe.”

Phillips goes on to say that most actors that portray the Clown Prince of Crime in films and TV series have to live in “darkness” to get in the proper mindset to play Joker. However, the director said that Phoenix has an easier time getting to that headspace.

“I would say he’s unusually comfortable in that space,” the filmmaker added.

In the history of superhero films, particularly in the last decade since they’ve become commonplace and increasingly popular, it’s only until recently that this genre has produced works that many are buzzing about for potential Oscar gold. Last year, that film was “Black Panther.” This year, “Joker” is getting the same buzz as it becomes a marquee title at various fall film festivals. Of course, Phoenix’s attachment to the project lends credibility to the film that probably wouldn’t have existed with another actor, especially considering his Oscar-nominated past.

Does Phillips succeed in making another quality Joaquin Phoenix movie about the comic book villain or just a plain-old “Joker” film starring Phoenix? We’ll find out soon enough as “Joker” hits theaters on October 4.
