Jonas Åkerlund To Direct Matt Lucas In Comedy 'Small Apartments'

Despite directing two trainwrecks — the dreadful drug drama “Spun” and the ridiculous serial killer tale “The Horsemen” — some still believe Jonas Åkerlund has the potential to helm a feature film worth watching.

Matt Lucas (“Little Britain,” “Alice in Wonderland“) has signed on to star in “Small Apartments” to be directed by Åkerlund. At the very least, the project will be a bit of gear change for the helmer, as it’s a comedy based on the book by Chris Millis that tells the dark, comic story of a group of neighbors. That’s all the plot details available for now (you can check out a slightly more expansive synopsis for the book below), but things are moving quickly as the film is expected to lens in March.

If you can’t wait that long for another Åkerlund joint, he’s directing the new Britney Spears video for “Hold It Against Me.” [ComingSoon]

Small Apartments, a capricious comedy of errors resonates with tremulous energy and memorable characters. Franklin Franklin is a fully realized and sympathetic protagonist in the vein of Ignatius Reilly (A Confederacy of Dunces), a simple man who yearns for “a land of pastoral serenity” devoid of the irritants of contemporary urban life. An off-beat tale, Small Apartments is accented along the way by murder, strange fingernail collections, and the occasional blast from a treasured alphorn.
