It took six years after the indie smash hit “Little Miss Sunshine” for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to make their follow-up “Ruby Sparks,” but it looks like they are wasting no time trying to find their next project. They are currently in talks to direct “The Good Luck of Right Now,” a film based on the Matthew Quick novel, which Mike White (“Enlightened”) adapted. Matthew Quick, as most of you may know, wrote “The Silver Linings Playbook” which was turned into a movie last year and nominated for a whole slew of awards. “The Good Luck of Right Now” follows four people who wind up forming an unlikely family together after experiencing great pain and loss in their lives. It’s uncertain whether this will be Dayton and Faris’s next project as they’re also attached to direct “I’m Proud of You,” which is based on the Tim Madigan novel. [Variety]
While Rob Reiner has many TV credits to his name, as an actor and writer, surprisingly, he has not done much work on television as a director. Now, he has signed on to produce and direct a TV series for SpikeTV entitled “Basket Case,” which is based on the best-selling novel by Carl Hiaasen. The novel, which will be adapted by Alex Taub (“Drop Dead Diva”), follows an investigative reporter who is demoted to the obituary desk after attacking his paper’s new, powerful owner. While at the obituary desk, he’s given a “unique window into the suspicious deaths and weird goings on in crime-ridden Miami. Using an unusual team of friends, relatives, an ex-wife, newspaper misfits, and his beautiful new boss, he strives to regain his investigative credibility and a saner life.” [Deadline]
Finally, writer Brian Duffield has been given the chance to make his directorial debut with “Vivien Hasn’t Been Herself Lately,” which is based on a script Duffield wrote himself. The horror-romance centers on “a married couple struggling to survive against a supernatural entity.” Brian Duffield has been pretty damn prolific as of late, despite none of his projects reaching the big screen (yet). He wrote “Jane Got a Gun,” which stars Natalie Portman and is currently in post-production, penned the Black List-ed script “Your Bridesmaid Is A Bitch” and also sold a spec script to Paramount entitled “Monster Problems.” On top of ‘Vivien,’ Duffield is currently writing “Insurgent” for Red Wagon and Summit Entertainment. “Jane Got a Gun” is expected to be released in theaters next year so, hopefully, we’ll finally get a chance to see the results of his hard work.
