Jonathan Entwistle Is Pretty OK With I'm Not Okay With This [Podcast]

There’s probably very little chance that you recognize the name, Jonathan Entwistle. That being said, you likely know the two Netflix series he’s shaped. The British filmmaker gained a ton of attention after directing the first four and a half episodes of the acclaimed first season of 2017’s “The End of the F***ing World” and was rewarded with his own series, “I’m Not Okay With This,” which debuted this past February. Entwistle’s aesthetic and tone is so impressive he’s already developing a new incarnation of “Power Rangers” for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro. Not that he thinks he has one.

Entwistle joined the Four Quadrant podcast to discuss how he brought “I’m Not Okay With This” to life and his directing style, which, frankly, he doesn’t seem to think he has one? During our conversation, Entwistle insisted that he just shoots classically using the three same lenses and standard long, medium and close up shots. Even if he was being humble, it was surprising to hear him seem indifferent he is to the fact that his work is artistic. If you’re a filmmaker or aspirationally working to be one its a fascinating discussion.

We also covered the fantastic casting of leads Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff, the difficulty of shooting in the Pittsburgh summer and how he’s managed a budget as a “stripped down crew in the states is a normal crew” overseas.
