It appears like Jonathan Nolan is carving out a pretty nice little place among the bigtime TV creators. After the success of his long-running CBS procedural “Person of Interest,” Nolan and co-creator Lisa Joy successfully have launched a new series, “Westworld,” on HBO. Now, it appears that the duo is back at it again with yet another sci-fi series, this time for a streaming service.

According to a report from The Wrap, Nolan and Joy are developing an adaptation of the William Gibson novel “The Peripheral” for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service. The story follows a woman named Flynne Fisher, who gets pulled into an abduction investigation after she takes over for her brother at his security job in a futuristic Arkansas. It’s described as a cyberpunk murder mystery, and that alone means we are down to watch Nolan and Joy’s take on it.
No word yet on casting, but this new series showcases Amazon’s latest push for more mainstream, populist TV. After starting their TV endeavors with a focus on more prestige series, and winning numerous awards for their efforts, Amazon has lately focused more on the big, headline-grabbing series like “The Peripheral” and the $1 billion “Lord of the Rings” adaptation. While they would probably still love to attract awards consideration, they still have to sell stuff, and the way to do that is to attract the most eyeballs to their content.
Now, Amazon finds themselves in a spending battle with Netflix (and streaming upstarts like Disney and Apple) to claim the throne as the biggest streaming service in the world. With Netflix announcing record subscribers, it looks like Amazon and the rest have a bit of an uphill battle.
However, with creators like Nolan and Joy, Amazon is sure to release high-quality content that could end up making them the king of the streaming hill.
