Jude Law Joined By John Malkovich For 'Young Pope' Sequel 'The New Pope'

Reports of Jude Law’s death at the end of “The Young Pope” have been greatly exaggerated, apparently. At the end of the 2017 limited series, which earned Law a Golden Globe nomination, the fate of the actor’s titular character was left open. Did he die? Will he return? Well, a year ago it seemed as if Law’s character was destined to meet his maker after the actor insinuated that he wouldn’t be returning. But as we now know, Law is set to return for a new round of ‘Pope,’ but with a new costar and a different title.

According to Deadline, Law is set to star in “The New Pope,” which will continue the story of his American Pope Lenny Belardo. There’s not much word on what the new series’ plot will be about, but it appears that Belardo’s fate at the end of “The Young Pope” has been answered. Joining Law in this new series is veteran actor John Malkovich, in an unnamed role.

As expected, “The New Pope” will see the return Paolo Sorrentino as co-writer and director of the series. Umberto Contarello is once again joining Sorrentino to co-write the series. The duo is just wrapping up work on their two-part film about Silvio Berlusconi, titled “Loro.”

Jude Law is finishing up work on Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel,” where he’ll star alongside Brie Larson. He’s also be seen later this year in the newest ‘Harry Potter’ spin-off “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” where he’ll play the famous Dumbledore. Malkovich is known for his many award-nominated performances and is currently filming the BBC production “The ABC Murders,” where he plays the legendary role of Hercule Poirot.

No word on a release date for “The New Pope,” but production is scheduled to begin in Italy in November.
