It’s been a while since Julia Roberts had a cinematic homerun, and her last string of feature films are dismaying to say the least. She featured in the “Secret In Their Eyes” remake which nobody saw, took a lead role in the thriller “Money Monster” which, again, nobody saw, and even went as low as starring in one of the worst movies of 2016, “Mother’s Day.” (We’ll politely overlook that she lent her voice to “Smurfs: The Lost Village“). Needless to say, she could use some quality material, but she’s finding it, like everybody else, on TV. Roberts will be starring in the Annapurna production “Today Will Be Different” at HBO, and now comes another small screen gig.

Roberts is in talks to star in “Homecoming.” The series is the latest from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, and is an adaptation of the hit podcast, which featured the voices of Catherine Keener, David Schwimmer and Oscar Isaac. The thriller tells the story of a caseworker at a secret government facility, with Roberts slated to play that character’s boss.
The project is in development over at Universal Cable Productions, and it’s certainly off to a strong start. No word yet on which network might pick it up, but Roberts’ involvement certainly means the major players are all going to be kicking the tires. Wherever it lands, we’re just happy to see Roberts working with strong material again. Listen to the first episode of the original podcast series below. [THR]
