Juno Temple, Emily Browning, Catalina Sandino Moreno Join Michael Cera in 'Magic Magic'

Now here’s an interesting project that is newly on our radar thanks to Cannes. Just last week, we learned that Michael Cera would join “The Maid” director Sebastian Silva for a thriller called “Magic Magic.” Variety reported yesterday that three lovely ladies — Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandino Moreno — will be on hand to work with him. All we know about the film so far is that a girl vacationing with her friends in Chile slowly starts to lose her mind. It’s not been made clear who will be taking the lead role, but judging from the billing and her rising star status, it’s more than likely going to be Temple.

These three ladies all have indie star status. Moreno broke out a few years ago with the miraculous “Maria Full of Grace” and will star in “Cristiada” later this year, while Browning is hitting up the Cannes circuit now for Julia Leigh’s erotic thriller “Sleeping Beauty.” Our reviewer quite liked the film, and though there was a lot of negative buzz around her last pic “Sucker Punch,” that was due to Zack Snyder’s insistence on making kiddie porn acceptable for mainstream viewers, not Browning’s performance.

Most interesting of all is Temple’s quick ascent to being one of the top indie girls in the business. She just signed up for “The Brass Teapot” with Michael Angarano, finished shooting a werewolf/lesbian romance called “Jack and Diane” due out this year and will go mainstream with a small role in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman sequel “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Silva is a fascinating director, and with this kind of young talent, he should be able to make something exciting and magical. We’re all ears for more details about this project, as producers Mike White, Christine Vachon, David Bernad and Pamela Koffler shop the domestic and foreign rights in Cannes for a late summer start.
