The “Jurassic Park“/”Jurassic World” franchise is well-known for recycling beloved characters in its sequels. ‘The Lost World‘ saw the return of Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) as a main character, and “Jurassic Park III” saw the return of Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) as a main character and Ellie (Laura Dern), for a brief cameo. And while “Jurassic World” hinted at the return of Ian Malcolm with an allusion to his book “God Creates Dinosaurs,” the whole film itself was basically a recycling affair (it was a “Jurassic Park” remake, for all intents and purposes), and ‘Fallen Kingdom‘ finally brought back Jeff Goldblum for a few brief but glorious moments.
Apparently, Colin Trevorrow, the writer and director of “Jurassic World” and co-writer of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” isn’t afraid of going back to the “Jurassic Park” well yet again in a future film and is dropping hints about bringing back more fan favorites.
“We felt like this was [Ian] Malcolm’s return, this was his moment…let him have his moment,” Trevorrow said on an episode of MTV’s “Seen It, Spill It.” “I feel that way about everyone, especially Laura [Dern] in that she never got to have her own movie. That, I identified as being something that’s important. And this moment with Goldblum, because he had this very clear set of ethical questions that he was able to pose for everybody, we just wanted to put the spotlight on him [Goldblum].”
Based on those comments, it certainly sounds like Trevorrow is considering writing a part for Dern’s now-iconic Ellie into a future entry (or entries) of the series. With everyone assuming that the next film will round out the current trilogy, it would make sense if Dern’s character makes her triumphant return. And with the way ‘Fallen Kingdom’ ended, really there are about a million reasons why Ellie would come back.
As for Alan Grant? When asked about the idea that fans would feel “robbed” if they didn’t see him in the third film, Trevorrow said, ” I totally agree with that. I would feel robbed too.” There you have it. Perhaps this means Ellie and Grant can rekindle old flames in “Jurassic World III.” Maybe they could double-date with Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt? At this point, anything’s possible with the series.
