In a piece of movie news that caught me by surprise, Katherine Waterston will be starring Jonah Hill‘s directorial debut, “Mid-90s,” and even more, will be replacing the previously cast Michelle Williams.

Waterston, known for her performances in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Inherent Vice” and the recent “Alien: Covenant” will be playing the mother of 12-year-old Stevie, as he navigates his way through the heady skateboard scene that has no shortage of drugs, drinking, sex and more, all while coming of age. Stevie will be played by Sunny Suljic, who plays Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman’s son in Yorgos Lanthimos‘s upcoming “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (my most anticipated movie of the year save for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.”) Lucas Hedges, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting performance in “Manchester By the Sea,” also stars as Stevie’s older brother.
This is one we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on, particularly with A24 throwing their weight behind it. [The Tracking Board]
