What’s going on in the world of “Star Wars”? Oh, not much. Just a new series already on Disney+ (“The Mandalorian”) and a new movie that’ll hit theaters right about the time the aforementioned show ends (“The Rise Of Skywalker”) in December. But what about what comes next? That’s a huge question on the minds of the fans given that “The Mandalorian” takes place in the past, and ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ is said to conclude the story of the nine-film Skywalker saga.
Furthermore, the “Game Of Thrones” creators recently left their mooted “Star Wars” trilogy, leaving “Star Wars” to fill the hole with a still vacant (and not taken off the table) December 2022 release. Could that be Rian Johnson’s trilogy, the rumored film by “Shutter Island” screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis? Something else?
Well, for one, don’t expect it to be Marvel chief Kevin Feige’s new “Star Wars” film idea. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said Feige’s film project is “a way’s off.”

“Kevin has been a huge fan of Star Wars, and he’s made that pretty clear,” she said, explaining how the producer came on board.” And I think when he went off to do a couple of the Spider-Man movies, he realized that he could kind of step in and out of what he’s doing specifically with just Marvel. He talked to us, and he talked to the studio and said, you know, ‘Is there any chance I could step in and do one of the Star Wars movies?’ And I thought it was a pretty cool idea. So, we’re just beginning to talk about what that might be and when that might be. But it’s a way’s off.”
OK, so pencil that one in a galaxy far, far away for now and expect Feige to produce it and handpick another team to make it as he has with his Marvel films. As for the other possibilities, well, Kennedy said they’re still in the discussion phase of what direction they’re going to go, teasing stories in the past, the future, and even potentially in another galaxy.
Describing it all as an “incredible challenge, and it is something that we’re in the middle of,” Kennedy said “no,” when asked whether they had decided yet on what’s next.
“We’ve got various things we’re looking at and various ways in which we can begin or not,” she explained. “As you can imagine. You know, do you go back? Do you go forward? All those questions are being asked. Do we stay in this galaxy? Do we go to another? The universe is never-ending. [Laughs.] The good news and the bad news. They have endless possibilities. It’s liberating, it’s exciting, and it creates a lot of pressure and anxiety as well.”
“The Mandalorian” is on Disney+ now, ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ is December 20 and as for that December 2022 date? You’ll have to keep guessing for now.
