'Son Of A Bitch': Kelly Oxford To Write & Direct New Comedy Feature For HBO Max

In an alternate COVID-19-less universe, Kelly Oxford is riding high off the huge debut of her directorial effort, “Pink Skies Ahead,” after its debut at SXSW. Sadly, the acclaimed writer-turned-filmmaker didn’t have the huge premiere for her debut feature, but that isn’t stopping her from continuing her rise as a filmmaker, with a new HBO Max feature titled “Son of a Bitch.”

According to Deadline, Oxford has just signed a deal to write and direct a new comedy film, “Son of a Bitch,” for HBO Max. The film is based on her original idea that follows the story of a young stoner girl that attempts to keep her hard-partying image alive even after she finds out she’s pregnant. Obviously, it’s a bit too early for any casting or release date news, but HBO Max being involved all but ensures a streaming exclusive release for the feature.

As mentioned, Oxford is coming off of her directorial debut, “Pink Skies Ahead,” which was one of the most anticipated features set to premiere at this year’s SXSW. Unfortunately, with the pandemic, the festival was canceled and we have yet to see where the film will end up having its world premiere. That film stars Jessica Barden, Odeya Rush, Rosa Salazar, and Marcia Gay Harden. Previously, Oxford was best known for her online presence and her two New York Times Best-Selling books. She’s still expected to continue her writing, as she moves into fiction with a new YA novel.

HBO Max is obviously getting onboard the Oxford train early because of the strength of her still unreleased debut film. This is all part of the fledgling streaming service’s attempt to keep up with Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Apple, and the rest of the streamers out there trying to win the film arms race with exclusive originals.
