During Comic Con 2009, Marvel Studios put on a helluva “Iron Man 2” presentation, but you just knew it wouldn’t be enough to stave off those hungering for more information on the studio’s proposed slate. Collider was one of many to sit-down with Kevin Feige, and they coerced the Marvel chief to reveal who would take part in the “Avengers” movie planned for 2012 (provided Roland Emmerich isn’t right).
Feige offers plainly that the basic characters are on the docket, but it appears the film isn’t going too hero-deep. “I think we know. It’s going to be Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury. I think it’s safe to assume that there will be some members of the Hulk universe in the film as well. In terms of the additional, I think Black Widow for sure. SHIELD’s organization for sure.”
Is Feige is merely listing stuff off the top of his head, especially considering his concession that Zak Penn (screenwriter behind “Elektra”) is still “outlining” the project? Feige proposes a pretty tight Avengers lineup, which stands contrary to the comics’ membership, a rotating door that eventually involved two separate branches and various reservists. Iron Man, Thor and Cap, who should all have their own separate franchises set up by the time the movie rolls around, seem like no-brainers. Still, this doesn’t bode well for Edgar Wright’s back-burned “Ant-Man,” somewhat surprising considering Ant-Man and his wife the Wasp are founding members of the team, along with the Hulk, who Feige doesn’t directly confirm.
In line with the Ultimates lineup, Nick Fury’s presence as a government liaison seems to make sense, as does Black Widow and a union with the SHIELD operations, but what does Feige mean when he says “members of the Hulk universe”? “The Incredible Hulk” closes on a sequence where Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark proposes the idea of the super-team to belligerent General Ross (William Hurt), so it’s likely he would show up. Is it possible the villains of the movie, Tim Roth’s Abomination and Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns/The Leader might have their contract options picked up? Perhaps we’ll see the inclusion of Ty Burrell’s Doc Samson, who in the comics becomes a gamma-exposed bruiser and eventual ally of the Avengers? Characters like She-Hulk seem to be only on the fringes of possibility.
Elsewhere on the Marvel Films beat, CHUD speculates heavily about the ties to these Marvel movies, specifically how the upcoming “The First Avenger: Captain America,” may lead into an “Avengers” movie. They believe one of the main enemies set up by the Cap movie will be the organization Hydra, a post-WWII group of rogue Nazis and criminals who continue into the modern world and could provide the film with its antagonist(s). In another article, however, they posit based on “top secret research” that the villain of the Avengers film will be the Skrulls, a shape-changing alien race known as the Chitauri in the “Ultimates” line that the movies are mostly drawing from. But why would Marvel Films want to repeat the Skrull/Chitauri conflict after not only using it in the “Ultimates” comics but also adapting it for their two animated direct-to-DVD “Ultimate Avengers” movies? Considering how different the incarnations of “Iron Man” and “Thor” differ strongly from that animated universe, that posit seems doubtful.
Naturally, all this stems from “The First Avenger: Captain America” being the lynch pin of the entire enterprise. Which is why the silence regarding the project until recently has been a surprise. Feige did speak to CHUD again about this, and he revealed that Cap would be portrayed alongside a group of international heroes (possibly The Invaders) and allies, which Feige admits is a better way of selling the film overseas, but also reflects the uncertainty and confusion surrounding the project. Turning the film into an outright “Avengers” prequel smells a whole lot like what happened with the recent “Wolverine” film, which was stuffed with small appearances from a series of D-List characters for the sole purpose of branding as opposed to storytelling.
We’ve been hearing some disconcerting things behind the scenes of this project, which is why “Thor” is raring to go early next year, but “Captain America,” set for a similar release date, has no finalized script, no cast (save for Tim Robbins as WWII scientist Howard Stark — one of our sources confirms that, despite what he’s said, Robbins also cameos in “Iron Man 2” and has signed one of those multi-film Marvel deals) and no direction. The Playlist has learned that, for awhile, feuding has occurred behind the scenes between Kevin Feige and director Joe Johnston regarding the number of super powered characters featured in the film (including Isaiah Bradley, the controversial black Captain America), and the news of Cap’s international friends suggests Johnston, never the studio’s first choice, has lost.
