If you were lucky enough to avoid spoilers before walking into the theater to see “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” you were probably delighted (and shocked) to see that J. Jonah Jameson was introduced as a character in the ‘Spider-Man’ universe once again, with familiar face J.K. Simmons taking on the role that he made so iconic in the Sam Raimi films. But according to Kevin Feige, Simmons is basically playing a completely different character.
While we don’t really get a true sense for the angle that Marvel Studios is taking with J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU, the scene does give us hints as to which direction the studio is going in with the iconic character. Shown as an Alex Jones-esque character, this version of Jameson is more of a reflection of the modern times versus the tried-and-true newspaper mogul that was used in the Raimi trilogy and the early comics.
And speaking to Screen Rant, the Marvel Studios president says that is a necessity. Feige says that when he discussed bringing the character into the MCU, he knew that the “romanticized” idea of a huge newspaper personality wouldn’t be relevant in today’s world. However, if you update the character, adding an extremist angle, Jameson retains a lot of the yelling and anger that defines him, while also becoming something different.
This means that J.K. Simmons can play a new version of the character.
“The thing is, JK Simmons is such a versatile actor,” he said. “Look at what he’s done over the years since his iconic portrayal of this character in the Sam Raimi films. And then all of his work, ‘Whiplash’ being one of the biggest ones.”
He continued, “It can be the same actor with that somewhat similar voice inflection, but with a totally different persona. That had never been done before. We really liked the idea that it’s a new Jameson, he’s not from another dimension or multiverse or something like that. It’s a new Jameson in this world played by the same actor.”
It’s likely that Jameson will be explored more in future films, and that’s a truly exciting prospect for Spidey fans. Until then, you can go see him again and again in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” in theaters now.
