Another red-blooded soul is seemingly en route to join Kevin Smith’s upcoming political horror film “Red State.” Slash Film dropped the news that Kevin Pollack, who appeared in Smith’s much-maligned “Cop Out,” has been offered a role in the helmer’s new film. Pollack confirmed that he received the offer on his Twitter account, but he did not elaborate on whether he had accepted it. We have little doubt in this regard, since Pollack is a respected character actor and would benefit from joining Smith’s new film, which has amassed quite an impressive cast in the last few months.
It is pitched as a story about “a group of kids [that] encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism””. Michael Parks (“From Dusk Til Dawn,” “Kill Bill Vol. 1”) is set to play the preacher, while the rest of the cast includes Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”), Michael Angarano (“Sky High,” “Snow Angels”), Kyle Gallner (“Jennifer’s Body”) and Stephen Root (“No Country For Old Men,” “Office Space”). Melissa Leo (“Frozen River”) is also in talks to join. Smith’s been actively seeking out actors he doesn’t normally work with and the project looks to be quite a change from his usual subject matter. The film is supposed to start shooting in a week, so perhaps Pollack’s rumored addition will round out the last of the cast, so production can get underway.
