Kevin Smith Once Again Announces 'Clerks 3': "It'll Be A Movie That Concludes A Saga"

Kevin Smith is back at it again. More than six years ago, the filmmaker teased the idea of a “Clerks 3.” Then it died. Last year, Smith teased fans once again, making it seem like “Clerks 3” was inevitable. Again, the project died. And now, 25 years after the original film hit theaters, the director is once again promising fans that “Clerks 3” will happen. For real this time. Like seriously.

Smith announced the news on his social media, detailing how a meeting with the original film’s star Jeff Anderson has led to the decision to make “Clerks 3” the next film he works on.

“We talked about making a movie together,” revealed the filmmaker. “It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning – a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey. It’ll be a movie that stars Jeff and @briancohalloran, with me and Jay in supporting roles. And it’ll be a movie called CLERKS III!”

As mentioned, this is far from the first time that Smith has talked about making this film. But you can’t blame the guy for wanting to revisit the franchise that put him on the map and led to a career that has spanned almost three decades. Released in 1994, “Clerks” found an audience almost immediately after a successful debut at Sundance. The film wasn’t a monster box office success (but then again, what Kevin Smith film is?), but found a loyal audience on home video.

The “Clerks” series was revisited in an eventual animated series and a feature film sequel, aptly titled “Clerks 2.” Those projects, once again, weren’t massive financial successes, but eventually were embraced by the Kevin Smith loyalists.

We’ll have to see if “Clerks 3” will break that trend and find some financial success for the director right out of the gate. That is if it ever gets made. Smith’s latest film, “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” arrives in select theaters on October 15.
