When Warner Bros. moved “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” to 2016, we always knew it would mean two years of speculation and rumors. What we didn’t know is that Kevin Smith, of all people, would be the biggest mouthpiece out of the gate. The best bro of Ben Affleck, has already sounded off that we might see multiple batsuits and vehicles for the Caped Crusader, and now he’s teasing WB’s entire vision for their DC Comics’ properties.
On a recent Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via Comic Book), Smith essentially posited that WB is taking the reverse-Marvel approach—building out their universe first, before making direct character sequels. It’s an interesting notion, and given how fast the studio is rushing toward “Justice League,” which is being shot back-to-back with “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” one that makes a lot of sense.
“But look, they’re obviously beginning something, and there’s a stretch of these flick… From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’s Batman/Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies,” Smith said. “But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented.”
Uh, shocker? It’s not the most surprising revelation, but in case you needed any more affirmation that WB wants to exploit one of the major brands under their roof, this is it. But what does Smith think about that goofy title?
“It’s a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don’t know why Batman V. Superman. Why not just throw the ‘s’ in there? Or spell it or something like that,” Smith pondered. “Or honestly, every comic book fan on the planet, who is a DC comic book fan, I think we all wanted to see ‘Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.’ ”
Anyway, the finest arrives on May 6, 2016.
