It’s truly unfortunate that the movies of Martin Scorsese have turned into such impossible endeavors despite the legendary filmmaker proving himself time and time again. After the behind-the-scenes saga of convincing Netflix to finance his crime epic “The Irishman,” now the eyes turn towards the equally-hard-to-shoot “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Originally, the film was supposed to start shooting this part March, before the pandemic destroyed those plans. Luckily, it seems like production finally has a start date, and shooting is scheduled to begin in February 2021.
A new report by Osage News and Principal Chief of the Osage Nation, Geoffrey Standing Bear, states that the film will get underway nearly a year after the intended date. “My latest information is that they would start filming, subject to Coronavirus, February 2021,” Standing Bear said. “And they will be here for about 16 weeks. They’re going to start moving in here quietly, I’m not helping that very much, but quietly around November and December. So, they’re coming.”
This would mean that, if everything goes according to plan, the shoot would wrap in mid-2021, with Scorsese and editor Thelma Schoonmaker probably not getting the film ready before late 2022 at the earliest. Of course, a new Scorsese film is still worth waiting, and it doesn’t look like “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be any different.
The film is set to star Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio and is based on the non-fiction book by David Grann. The film will follow the story of how the Osage Nation in Oklahoma became incredibly wealthy overnight after oil was discovered on their land, until one by one, members of the Nation began to be killed off in the 1920s. The murders eventually caught the attention of the newly-formed FBI.
